Abstract

Since the 1970s and 1980s, issues related to violence against women in private and public space and the challenges of ensuring the safety of women have increasingly become a central concern. The United Nations has placed significant emphasis on its implications for gender equality and female empowerment, viewing the prevention of violence against women as a step towards the achievement of gender equality. The UN Secretary General’s 2006 in-depth Study of all Forms of Violence Against Women, for example, emphasises that violence against women constitutes a human rights violation and a significant barrier to the achievement of gender equality. Among the foremost international agreements on women’s equality is the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), adopted in 1979 by the UN General Assembly. This document has often been described as an international bill of rights for women. Although the Convention does not directly address violence, by accepting the Convention, States commit themselves to undertake a series of measures to end discrimination against women in all its forms. The present paper analyses the present crime trend rapidly increasing against women in India. It also explores main causes in increasing the crimes against women in India.
